Archaeological Discovery Unearthed at Pointe Michel

A piece of Dominica’s history dating back over 250 years was discovered when Trevor Best an engineer contracted by CO Williams accidently unearthed what looked like a large cast iron cannon while undertaking a sea defense wall project in the sea-side village of Pointe Michel situated on the south of the Island.

It was later revealed by local historian Lenox Honychurch that the cannon unearthed may have been one of three cannons that defended the village of Pointe Michel during the wars fought between the British and French in the 18th Century.

Preparations are now on the way to place this piece of Pointe Michel’s History on public display.

The Indian River

The Indian River is like a mini Amazon teeming with life – situated in the center of the town of Portsmouth to the North of Dominica.

The river was name Indian River after the settlements of the Kalinagos formally known as Carib Indians that existed on the upper banks of that river.

The Indian river gushes down the Morne aux Diables Mountain range and meanders to the gently lowlands of Portsmouth where it flows gracefully into the Caribbean sea. Due to its’ unique formation, being below the sea level the water at the lower areas of the rivers is brackish, contributing to its unique vegetative growth and life forms.

The Indian River showcases Flora and Fauna that are very unique to that area of Dominica , some of this variants including Herons , King fisher, iguanas , varieties of birds.

The trip up the river take about 1 – 1 ½ hours.

At the top of the river sits a bar that serves a really bizarre menus and dish up some of the hottest local rum. There are lots to see and much history to learn so its vital that you take along your camera. Some of scenes in Pirate of the Caribbean was shot there.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a flowering plant in the ginger family, is widely used as a food coloring and is one of the principal ingredients in curry powder. Turmeric has long been used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive disorders and liver problems, and for the treatment of skin diseases and wound healing. Turmeric is a spice people put in food and not a drug. So can a spice in food turn back or prevent Alzheimer’s and any other dementia? Turmeric has a warm, bitter taste and is used extensively as a food flavoring and colorant; it is a primary component of curry powders and some mustard. The spice has a long tradition in Asian medicine to treat problems ranging from flatulence to hemorrhage.

Turmeric is a spice that is used extensively in Indian cooking. The key reason for this is that turmeric root extract provides medical components which have a chance to treatment aliments from within in addition to while applied to your skin. Turmeric has been used as healing packs that can be applied on the skin. Turmeric extract is surely an intense ingredient consequently a good idea is to not use it right on the skin. It may not cause any harm when applied directly but some skin types are extremely sensitive. Hence the best way to apply turmeric would be to mix with up with milk cream.

Turmeric may help people with ulcerative colitis stay in remission. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the digestive tract where symptoms tend to come and go. Turmeric is the number one cancer preventing food. You can take our Turmeric Extract or at least try finding turmeric powder from any local grocer and add it in your diet everyday. Turmeric is now grown and exported from tropical regions all over the world, but is extensively cultivate in its native India where it is consumed and exported in large quantities.

Waitukubuli National Trail

Dominica is pleased to boast of its Waitukubuli National Trail, which is the Caribbean’s premier long distance hiking trail. The Waitukubuli National Trail was successfully established through the support of the government of Dominica, the European Union and the Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation. This trail is geared at attracting real nature lovers, persons looking for a fun way to exercise and photographers seeking exceptional subjects. This extraordinary trail runs from Scottshead in the south of the island, for 115 miles (184 km), to the Cabrits National Park in the north. The trail slithers up and down the country’s mountainous terrain, and meticulously traces the ridges of this island’s vertebrae.

The fourteen segments of this natural wonder retrace the paths used by maroons (runaway slaves) during the slavery era. Thus, hiking through the Waitukubuli National Trail is more than just enjoying nature. Rather, it is an opportunity to relive and revisit the history of the islanders, as one takes part in the journey the ancestors took. Consequently the scenes move from the natural attractions of the island, to historic elements such as the stone wall built by the maroons as seen in Segment 2.

Hiking along the Waitukubuli National Trail is indeed a thrilling experience! The vast variety of flora and fauna one encounters is a mere indication of Dominica’s truly rich nature as an ecotourism destination. The many farms that the hiker will see along the way, as well as the farmers with backs bent against the sun on a warm tropical day reflects the hard working nature of the Dominican people and will serve as evidence that agriculture is alive and well in Dominica. The crystal, clear, flowing rivers and streams along the journey scream out the presence of water on an island that has always boasted having 365 rivers. The sulphur springs and pools in Soufriere and Wotten Waven allow the hiker a chance to experience the healing wonders of nature as one basks in the rejuvenating water. Mountaintop views of the sky, ocean and scenic valleys as well as villages and hamlets warmly nestled in the valleys make the Waitukubuli National Trail a must.

Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to take on the challenge that this trail presents. Not only does the trail test stamina and endurance, but it also serves as a health exercise. To truly enjoy the nature of this island is to know it to the core. Waitukubuli National Trail definitely runs through the core of this island. Hikers, historians, nature lovers, poets, artists and photographers: this is the opportunity to be inspired by nature. Get to know your true potential. Even more so, get to know Waitukubuli. Indeed, “Tall is her body”!

Cabrits National Park (Fort Shirley)

Once the site of the most impressive military installation in the West Indies, this 18th Century garrison (Fort Shirley also called Cabrits) was built to protect the north area of Dominica by the British and French respectively. After years of abandonment the restoration of the Cabrits began in 1989 by Dr. Lennox Honychurch.

Cabrits is situated to the west of two famous mountain ranges, Morne Aux Diables to the North and Morne Diablotin to the South (named after the Diablotin bird that once found a habitation in the heights of these mountains). It was built on the remains of two volcanic craters on the North West coast of Dominica, overlooking Douglas Bay to the north and Prince Rupert’s Bay in the South.

The name Cabrits derives from the Spanish, French and Portuguese name for goat, an animal which has been indigenous to the peninsula. Sailors coming to the island left goats to run wild so that when they revisit the island there will be fresh meat available for food.

The Cabrits was a strategic post for defending Dominica. Although the Cabrits itself never saw a fight, it served well as a fortress and lookout point. With the end of the hostility between the French and the British, Fort Shirley became obsolete and was abandoned in 1854.

The Battle of the Saints was seen in full view from the vantage point of Cabrits. Fort Shirley was the scene for the famous revolt of the 8th West Indian Regiment in 1802.

Cabrits became a national park in 1986.

The Cabrits National Park is a beautiful and open-air museum enjoyable to all, particularly nature lovers, those wanting a romantic getaway, historians, and those who want to enjoy beautiful scenery.

A tour by foot of the Cabrits is very easy and is recommended for visitors of all ages. The walk up to Fort Shirley from the base of Cabrits is about 10 minutes. Additionally, there are two fort installations on the very top of the West end and East end of Cabrits that would require you to walk at least 1 to 1.5 hours up the trails. However visitors are to exercise extreme caution in those areas.

Furthermore the calm, crystal blue coastal water near the Cabrits National Park is a great place for scuba diving, wreck diving and snorkeling. Beautiful and rare species of fish, attractive coral reefs and bubbling hot streams are all part of the exhilarating sea life near the Cabrits National Park. The melodious sound of this alluring Caribbean Sea as its waves gently crash against the shoreline warmly calls the visitors to bask in this basin of blue on a warm tropical day.

Thus, for the one seeking not only an adventure on land but who wishes to venture through the enticing enchantment of the underwater world, the Cabrits National Park is indeed the place to visit. Visitors to the north of Dominica cannot feel complete unless time has been set aside to visit the majesty of the Cabrits National Park.

Amongst Top Ten Whale Watching Destination Around The World

Dominica continues to gain international recognition with its latest spot being named in the top 10 best whale watching destinations around the world, this come after Dominica was recognized by National Geographic, Yahoo Travel and Sherman Travel for its natural beauty and ecosystem.

Here is what the Huffington Post states” Scuba divers already know this remote Caribbean island thanks to its brilliant coral reefs, magnificent sea life, and bubbling underwater hot springs. But the island recently earned a new title, of “Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean,” which launched this eco-friendly destination to a whole new level.

Set between Martinique and Guadeloupe, and often visited by 40-ton whales, who like to socialize, mate, and play off its shores, a boat excursion from Dominica promises a 90-percent chance of spotting one up close.

The waters are particularly partial to sperm, killer (both “false killers” and orcas), and pigmy whales, which are most often seen on whale-watching adventures between late November and March.”

That said, many also like to hang around all year long

MV Norwegian Star makes its inaugural call to Dominica

The MV Norwegian Star of the Norwegian cruise Line made its inaugural call to Dominica on Saturday October 29th, 2010, amidst all the independence festivities.

Representative of the ship’s agent H.H.V Whitchurch and Company Limited Hans Victor encouraged the ship which is scheduled to make only one call to Dominica to add the island to its monthly itinerary.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism Mrs. Esther Thomas said that it is indeed a pleasure to welcome the Norwegian star to the island on behalf of the government and people of Dominica.

In the interim the ship’s captain said that the Norwegian Star is delighted to have successfully made its inaugural call to Dominica.

After a brief welcoming ceremony which was held abroad the ship, officials from Discover Dominica Authority and the Ministry of Tourism as well as the Media was given a tour of the thirteen (13) deck Cruise Ship.

Sadly, the inaugural call was hampered by torrential rains, forcing many of the Cruise passengers to remain on board the ship.

Earlier today, Tuesday November 02nd, 2010 Carnival Victory of the Carnival Cruise Line made its final call to Dominica, after citing the high cost of fuel as the reason for their decision.
